The Alabama Wildlife Federation is offering a variety of volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the Alabama Nature Center at Lanark, located in Millbrook, Alabama. Volunteer categories include, but are not limited to, the following:
NEW! Welcome Desk Attendant—Are you a "people-person" and looking for a great place to volunteer? This position is open Monday-Friday 8am-1pm. It will require the volunteer to learn about our programs, as well as perform these basic duties:
- Greet Guests
- Provide printed and verbal program information to guests
- Provide direction/circulation information to meeting and event guests
- Manage Register
- Answer and direct phone calls
- Operate theater
- On occasion, operate gift shop.
NEW! Special Events—These positions are specific to the program(s) for which you would like to volunteer. These opportunities are perfect for families who would like to volunteer together, or for students who need to earn service hours for service clubs. A few of the positions and their duties are listed below:
- Assisting with set up, clean up, and crafts for the Christmas at Lanark program
- Assisting with set up, pick up, and distribution of Lanark Field Day lunches
- Assisting with set up of equipment for special events
- Assisting with set up and clean up for Fishing Rodeo
- Assisting with planning, set up, and clean up for the AWF Critter Crawl
NEW! Gift Shop Attendant—This position is open Monday-Friday 8am-1pm. It will require the volunteer to learn about our programs, as well as perform these basic duties:
- Greet Guests
- Manage register
- Assist with inventory management and restocking
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization
- Assist with welcome desk
- Provide printed and verbal program information to guests
- Provide direction/circulation information to meeting and event guests
NEW! Animal Care Team—Do you love animals and looking for a great way to get your hands-on some really cool ones? This position is open from 8 am - 5 pm. It will require an interest in animal husbandry, as well as performing these basic duties of feeding resident animals (snakes, turtles, frogs, salamanders, and more); cleaning enclosures and assisting Animal Curator with other daily duties as needed.
AWF Fishing Team—this team of volunteers will assist with pre- and post-event fishing preparations, actual fishing events, and pond management activities at Lanark. Specific activities include fishing tackle preparation, upkeep and organization, fishing assistance such as casting instruction, baiting hooks, releasing caught fish, tabulating and maintaining harvest data, and fishing event set-up and breakdown.- Greet Guests

Invasive Species Task Force—this team of volunteers will assist with removal of invasive species prevalent on the Lanark property.
Trail Crew—this team of volunteers will assist with periodic trail and boardwalk inspection, trimming and removal of light vegetation encroaching on trails, leaf blowing, and minor trail and boardwalk repair and improvements.
Floral Team—this team of volunteers, which already includes a host of Master Gardeners, will assist with upkeep and maintenance of the floral gardens and grounds at Lanark and with educational programs related to the propagation of both native and ornamental plants. Specific activities include planting and tending to bulbs, annuals, herbs, shrubs, and trees, weeding, pruning, flower and foliage collection, and assisting with planting demonstrations and activities associated with youth and adult education programs.
Conservation Educational Program Team—this team of volunteers will assist with the delivery of conservation education programs during Lanark Field Days, Expedition Lanark summer day camp, and ertain general public weekends. Specific duties may include guiding nature hikes, supervising students, and assisting ANC instructors with program development.
Administrative Team—this team of volunteers will assist with office preparation of announcements, mail-outs, materials, and supplies in advance of planned educational activities and major events.
ANC Public Weekend Team—this team of volunteers will assist with managing the Pavilion Outpost general store during General Public Weekends and preparations for weekend activities. Specific duties may include selling merchandise and concessions from the Pavilion Outpost; table, chair, and weekend event materials set-up and breakdown, parking, traffic and pedestrian flow management, golf cart shuttle service, and trash collection and disposal.
