BACKGROUND: The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) is a 501c3 charity and the state’s oldest and largest citizen’s conservation organization. Established in 1935, AWF’s mission is to promote the wise use and responsible stewardship of Alabama’s wildlife, forests, fish, waters, and soils. This is accomplished through programs and projects in three primary focus areas: Conservation Education, Resource Stewardship, and Hunting and Angling Heritage.  AWF’s Comprehensive Conservation Education Strategy includes outdoor, inquiry-based learning opportunities on school grounds through our Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program and professionally-led real-world outdoor education experiences at our Alabama Nature Center. Over 75,000 youth and school group participants are materially impacted annually by AWF’s Comprehensive Conservation Education Strategy.

AWF’s Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program is composed of 350+ enrolled K-12 schools around the state to which AWF provides guidance and technical assistance for the sustainable development and utilization of outdoor learning stations and schoolyard habitats on school grounds as educational tools for teachers and students. The demand for Alabama Outdoor Classroom assistance requires expansion of AWF’s full-time Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program staff.

POSITION SUMMARY:  
The AWF Outdoor Classroom Specialist will provide technical assistance & support for K-12 schools who want to develop and use a schoolyard wildlife habitat for hands-on, inquiry-based learning through the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program with an emphasis on working with schools in north Alabama.

DUTIES: Activities include but are not limited to the following:

1. Provide on-going assistance and support to schools enrolled in the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program in north Alabama, including the following: 
  • Basic Information Requests about the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program
  • School Faculty Surveys
  • Outdoor Classroom Site Evaluations and Habitat Assessments on School Grounds
  • Customized Outdoor Classroom Site Maps using Microsoft Word & Google Earth
  • Customized Materials Lists and Estimated Budgets
  • Outdoor Classroom Work Day Planning and Assistance
  • Long-term Maintenance Plan Development
  • Faculty Training for Educational Use of Outdoor Classroom.
2. Organize and facilitate regional and on-site teacher training workshops and webinars for Alabama Outdoor Classroom schools.

3. Manage and carry out projects included in the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program strategic plan.

Minimum Education/Experience    
Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Environmental Science and/or Education

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
  • Knowledge of native wildlife, wildlife habitat, and/or environmental sciences.
  • Experience working with K-12 schools including administrators, teachers and students.
  • Experience using hands-on, outdoor, conservation education activities.
  • Experience in delivering professional development to teachers.
  • Experience with using Microsoft Word or Publisher for design work including layout of images and text.
  • Experience with webpage development and social media
  • Experience with building and maintaining outdoor gardens with native plants and annuals
  • Demonstrated ability to plan ahead, be organized, yet capable of adjusting to meet changing circumstances with limited notice.
  • Demonstrated ability to fluidly form relationships with a wide range of people.
  • Demonstrated written and enthusiastic oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team.

COMPENSATION/EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS:
  • Starting Salary: $35,000 - $37,500 commensurate with education and experience
  • Meal and lodging expenses covered for travel when required
  • Business use of personal vehicle reimbursed at the federal mileage rate
