AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventure

As Americans we enjoy freedom more than anyone. Nowhere in our nation can we experience this freedom like we can in Alabma's beautiful outdoors. The wonder and freedom of nature abounds in her forests, fields, and streams.

Whether exercising this outdoor freedom through hiking, hunting, fishing, canoeing, or camping, it is a freedom that many take for granted. These liberties however, have been purchased with a price. Men and women of Alabama's Police, Fire and Military service have given their lives to protect us and defend our civil liberties. It is to these brave heros that the Alabama Wildlife Federation dedicates Legacy Outdoor Adventures. It is our way of thanking these fathers and mothers by sharing a love of the values they died to defend through outdoor adventures with thier children's children who are the legacy of ultimate sacrifice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures?
AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures is a program that provides guided and supervised outdoor activities for children of Alabama's fallen Police, Fire, and Military Heroes. It is our goal through AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures to provide outdoor experiences that these children may not experience otherwise or as frequently.

Who can participate in the AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures Program?
The AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures program is open to all children, age 15 and younger, of fallen Alabama Police, Fire, or Military personnel who sacrificed their life in the line of duty.

What types of outdoor activities will be provided?
Fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, and canoeing are the initial activities AWF plans to provide through the AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures program. The specific planning and scheduling of activities will be based on feedback from children that become involved in the AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures program.

Where will AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures events be held?
AWF will plan 2-3 events annually that provide outdoor activities of high interest to the children in the program. Most annual events will provide multiple sites across the state on the same weekend so that the children and their families will have a relatively short drive in order to participate.

Will children who participate be able to have a parent, relative, or friend accompany them to AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures events?
Always. In fact, this will be strongly encouraged and advocated. As we honor our fallen heroes and provide outdoor experiences to their children, we will never lose site of promoting the "youth and family" involvement aspect of the experience. Parents and adult relatives will benefit from the comfort level associated with being there with their child. As well, children often enjoy outdoor activities more when they can share the experience with a friend.

Can individuals and companies make donations to help with the program?
AWF will ensure that AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures programs are FREE to the children who enroll. Doing so will take substantial monetary and physical resources to conduct events on a regular basis. Donations from individuals and companies that want to help are welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Are other organizations associated with the AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures program?
The Alabama Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and the Alabama Chapter of Gold Star Wives Of America, a support organization for families of fallen military heroes, have assisted AWF with developing the program and sharing information with families in their organizations. AWF is proud and honored to be associated with both of these exemplary organizations through AWF Legacy Outdoor Adventures. We also anticipate that more public service organizations will become involved as the program grows.
