AWF Recognizes GCAA Recipients

The Alabama Wildlife Federation held the banquet, co-sponsored by the Alabama Power Company and PowerSouth Energy on Friday, August 3, 2012 at The Marriott Legends at Capitol Hill in Prattville. Other sponsors included Consolidated Pipe & Supply, Inc., First South Farm Credit, Mr. Josh & Mrs. Mary Virginia Mandell, Mr. Lee Thuston, McGiffert & Associates, LLC and Talladega Superspeedway.
 
The AWF Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards, considered the most prestigious conservation honors in the state of Alabama, promote leadership by example and in turn increase conservation of our natural resources including our wildlife, forests, soils, water and air.  Over the past 30 years, AWF has presented these awards to individuals and organizations that make great contributions to the conservation of Alabama’s wildlife and related natural resources. 
 
This year’s award recipients are:
 
Conservationist of the Year: Sam Upchurch, Birmingham
Wildlife Conservationist of the Year: Claude Jenkins, Millbrook
Forest Conservationist of the Year: Russell Lands, Alexander City
Water Conservationist of the Year: Scott Bridge Company, Opelika
Soil Conservationist of the Year: Tim Scott, Cullman
Air Conservationist of the Year: Anniston Army Depot, Anniston
Conservation Organization of the Year: Ducks Unlimited, Alabama State Council
Conservation Communicator of the Year: Direct Communications, Birmingham
Conservation Educator of the Year: Amy Clark, Decatur
Judicial Conservationist of the Year: Judge Steven L. Whitmire II, Fort Payne
Legislative Conservationist of the Year: Sen. Del Marsh, Anniston; Rep. Randy Davis, Daphne
Conservation Enforcement Officer of the Year: Sergeant Donald Alan Roach, Selma
Hunter Safety Instructor of the Year: Michael D. Gooch, Elkmont
Youth Conservationist of the Year: Brandon Bounds, Northport
