Guinn & Nancy Paulk, Haywood Sanders, and Warren Marshall

Venison Back Strap, Almond Crusted Red Fish, Pecan Smoked Grecian Gobbler, and Mahi Mahi Delights were just some of the tasty dishes offered at the Alabama Wildlife Federation’s (AWF) Wild Game Cook-Off State Finals held at AWF’s headquarters (Lanark) in Millbrook last Saturday, August 8. This championship event is a combination of winners from the regional events throughout the year. Fifteen teams were there to win the coveted State Champion Title, not to mention the $1,000 grand prize that goes along with it!

The judges, Kenny Hinds, Michael Harper, Major Christopher Amos, and Tom Stackhouse had it rough, but in the end Lee County’s Dirt & Whiskey including Philip Davis, Amanda Davis, Robin Adair, and Hugh Meeks placed first with their scrumptious Smoked Quail Pannini.

Montgomery Eye Care & Marshall Design Build including Guinn & Nancy Paulk, Haywood Sanders, and Warren Marshall secured second place with their delicious Grilled Royal Red Shrimp with Shrimp Bisque. First South Farm Credit / Smokin Hole including Stephen Hanners, Wanda Hanners, Lee Childers, and Michael McCraney took home third for their delectable Coon Hash Eggrolls with Coon Fried Rice.

Montgomery Eye Care & Marshall Design Build including Guinn & Nancy Paulk, Haywood Sanders, and Warren Marshall won the best presentation award with their hunting lodge display. Wild Boar Cookers of Covington County including Burlin Findley, Chuck Downing, Tony Salter, and Jake Gibbs won second place for their display.

In addition to the great food, there was a silent auction and musical entertainment. The Alabama Army National Guard also sponsored a People’s Choice Award that was won by Montgomery Eye Care and Marshall Design Build. They also had their customized “Orange County Chopper” on display and had several fun activities on hand such as sumo wrestling suits and arm wrestling station, as well as a misting tent.

The purpose of the Wild Game Cook-Offs is to supply a place for AWF members to interact, for non-members to learn more about AWF, and to provide the opportunity to raise funds to support AWF and its programs and projects. The Wild Game Cook-Offs also demonstrate that sportsmen/women utilize the wild game and fish they harvest and cook it with care, skill and expertise to produce great table fare.
